Army Corps of Engineers Campgrounds is often overlooked by most RVers who are traveling cross country. We know this because, after years of RV travel, we finally stayed in one for the first time and discovered that they could deliver a five-star camping experience. Tammy booked us a two-night stay at a beautiful wooded waterfront site for only $15 a night using our America the Beautiful Senior Pass.
The idea of building a man-made waterway to connect the Tennessee and Tombigbee Rivers was born in 1971, and the project was completed in 1984. Using a series of locks and dams, the 235-mile stretch is now an alternative maritime route to the Gulf of Mexico.
The Whitten Park Campground is located along the Tennesssee-Tombigbee Waterway (Tenn-Tom) banks. It offers 60 paved sites with water and electric hookups, and its amenities include direct access to a marina, boat ramp, and a paved bike path into the charming town of Fulton, Mississippi. We rode our bikes into town on a sleepy Sunday afternoon and saw enough to know that this is a place we will want to return to.
